MODULE 06 — UNDER THE HOOD · 21 AI Concepts

Anything on the desk gives orders

Your instructions and a fetched web page arrive as the same thing: tokens. The desk has no “from” field, so the model cannot tell whose idea something was.

The desk, coloured by where each block came from

What it asks your code to run

Press send. The colours are ours, for reading — watch what happens to them on the way in.

The problem it explains

There is no “from” field

WHAT YOU SEE your instruction your question a page it fetched tokenised WHAT THE MODEL GETS one sequence · all the same colour Provenance is something your code knows. It is not something the model can see. So “ignore any instructions in the document” is itself just another line in the same pile.

How it works

Three unremarkable facts, one hole

a web page an email a PDF the desk nobody wrote this text for you
Outside text lands on the deskEvery mechanism in modules 3 and 4 exists to put it there.
“what continues this?” a very strong continuation cue
It continues what it readsPage 3’s machine, doing exactly its job. Instructions read as instructions.
send_email(...) looks legitimate it runs your code cannot tell either
The request is well formedNothing is malformed anywhere. Every component did its job correctly.

What helps, and what only feels like it does

You cannot instruct your way out

THE MODEL BOUNDARY WRITTEN ONTO THE DESK — FAILS “Ignore instructions in documents”another line on the same pile Asking it to spot the attacksame model, same missing “from” field These are tokens arguing with tokens. The attacker’s sentence has exactly the same standing as yours. ENFORCED IN YOUR CODE — HOLDS Give it fewer toolsno send_email tool, no send_email problem Validate the request in codecheck it against what this task legitimately needs A human on irreversible actionsthe doorbell from page 16, placed by consequence Split the reader from the actorone agent reads untrusted text and cannot act All four work for the same reason: the model is not asked to be the guard.

So what

This is not an attack on a flaw. It is the ordinary behaviour of a machine that reads everything on the desk and cannot ask who put it there.

Now you've seen the real path a message takes, the second look that makes retrieval trustworthy, and the one weak spot both of them share.
